A Prayer for the Economy and Our Work

The following is a prayer given by the Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles Executive Director Steve Lindsey on the economy and work as part of a Sunday morning worship service at Pacific Crossroads Church.

Dear God of heaven and earth, we thank you and rejoice over the resources and opportunities we share in this country with so much economic freedom. Help us to bear your image well as we steward with love and care, the institutions, systems, technologies, governance, and social interactions needed to serve the common good of our city, and especially the great needs of those near us living on the margins of life.

Comfort our many anxieties during this season of social unrest and global pandemic. Whether from recent loss of work, overwork, or dramatic change to the way we work, break into the upturned stressful world of so many of our work lives.

We confess we often rush forward seeking our identity, comfort, and security in our work. Help us admit we toil too often in self-reliance. For we do not know what will come next, but we can trust you to sustain and grow us by your presence and your promise to provide for and guide us one day at a time.

Use the very labor of our hands and minds to serve what you are about in the world today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
